D3 VR APP

When the pandemic hit, D3 Solutions, a pioneering local race organiser and printer, did not want serious athletes to be left in the lurch.  At the cost of $150,000, they made the D3_VR app, a platform for runners and cyclists to clock their times and distances.

The virtual race platform uses GPS to record distance and, crucially, advanced analytics to determine if a participant is “cheating”, for example by taking a bus.

This element of accountability is what makes the D3_VR the first race app of its kind locally – it allowed true competition even before mass sporting events were allowed.

Said Mr Zubinn Tan from D3 Solutions, “Once we developed the app we offered it to some traditional event partners who declined as they did not want to be the first to try it. So we overcame it by launching a few events ourselves, so far 5, 10,15km runs and a round-island cycling event.  These have recently concluded and we’ve even held our own marathon, the Niu Year Runfastic Marathon.”

By using the app and running, even alone, athletes can participate in various races.  At present, the platform is being used for SAFRA ExploreSG, a series of 6km runs around the island that will continue till the end of April.  It is also used by schools for cross country and IPPT.

Said Mr Tan, “The most rewarding thing is that we have nearly 150,000km logged by users of the app over a few events, so it is definitely working.  The more distance we record, the more confidence I have.”

“Our most memorable event was the SAFRA Bay Run and Army half marathon.  It was special because all the team leaders crowded around my table demanding to see their team results, and claimed some team members’ data was missing.  In the end they jumbled up the timing chips amongst themselves, so we had to prove their results to them accordingly.

After that, we learnt that we have to give watertight instructions and sharpen our processes as some participants take the competition very seriously, and as a race timing vendor we do not want to disappoint.

We have many clients including community clients like CCs or PA, MOE schools and popular races in singapore.  Because of Covid-19, approximately 200 projects planned for 2020 were all cancelled.

We pioneered online registration and race pack collection systems for mass participant events in Singapore in 2002 and so in line with that, we came up with a virtual race platform during Covid-19.

We did not manage to pivot to blue sky industries like selling durians or F&B so we just chose the next safest vertical we thought we can pull off with all our current resources, hopefully it would allow us to remain in business till we are “back to normal”.

Our jobs are fulfilling when everyone manages to collect their race pack and entitlements without waiting in queues for a long time or when everyone gets their results published in a timely manner.  It is also fulfilling when we confidently can identify abnormalities in the data and disqualify those entries.  And, when things work out, I appreciate a thank you for a job well done.  Luckily, things have generally worked out so far!”

Dreamseeds Arts Fest 2020

Moving events online has been challenging and in particular, events centering on tangible displays are tough to adapt.  However, Club Rainbow, a non-profit organisation providing compassionate services to the families of children with chronic illnesses, did not let that stop them from going digital with their annual arts festival in 2020.

The Dreamseeds Arts Fest (DSAF) was set up in 2016 to showcase the artistic and creative achievements of beneficiaries, celebrate the freedom of creation and expression, and work with creative practitioners to invite public participation, building an inclusive arts community.

“It was definitely challenging as it was our first time organising a virtual festival. But we are heartened by how resilient our beneficiaries (and our artist-collaborators!) were when it came to adapting to new ways of working together,” said a spokesman for Club Rainbow.

Working within the Covid-19 guidelines meant that pre-fest virtual sessions were conducted via online platforms like Microsoft Teams and daily fest activities were held on Zoom.  Beneficiaries showed great self-discovery, creativity, perseverance and empowerment in adapting to the changes.

Club Rainbow’s arts development initiatives aim to empower their beneficiaries through the arts and as such, Arts Development is one of CRS’ core pillars of support.  Given the shift to virtual platforms, Club Rainbow is planning out its year-long arts programmes and continues to look for greater opportunities to expose beneficiaries to different arts development mentorships and creative collaborations with local artists and arts groups.

Children under the Dreamseeds Visual Arts programmes can even be commissioned for their artwork which is then reproduced on different items such as corporate gifts, tokens of appreciation and door gifts.

Bab Mori Makeup

“I was working on a show for Suria.  The talent was supposed to be acting as mechanics so I had to make them look all dirty and oil-greased.  I had nothing of that sort in my makeup bag so I quickly grabbed mascara and argan oil (which I normally use for chapped lips) and just mixed them up.  The result?  Success!  It still makes me laugh whenever I think about it because I got all panicky and wanted to cry!

In any field, working toward success means encountering struggles.  For me, I have had hate comments directed against me by those who saw me as “competition”.  I chose not to retaliate because if I did, I would be just as bad.  To this day, I’m happy I didn’t do that because in the end I gained more love from others and people saw me as being patient.

Take every piece of feedback with an open heart, though: for each piece of good feedback, say thank you and remember to always remain humble.  For every bad piece of feedback, take it constructively and also thank the person who gave it to you because if they did not do that, you would not be able to improve.

At the end of the day, to be able to play a part in a couple’s “once-in-a-lifetime” special day or to witness performers in a dance act and to know that I am behind their makeup looks creates feelings that are just beyond words!  It’s such a fulfilling experience each time!”

Rock Central 2020

It is Saturday evening in December and while most school campuses are silent and dark at 8pm, at ITE College Central, the night is just beginning.  In a Blackbox performance space flooded with light, shoegaze and screamo acts are taking the stage in ITE’s annual Rock Central event, a free concert showcasing both up-and-coming and veteran performers alike.

The concert is filmed, photographed and livestreamed and an extensive crew works on staging, lighting and sound.  Everything about Rock Central screams high production value, except that this event is run by amateurs.

Many people in the events industry do not cut their teeth until they’ve left education but for students in the ITE College Central Audio Visual Production Management (AVPM) club CCA, running professional music shows is a common occurrence.

The 70 student members, who are mostly in their late teens and early twenties, do everything from setting up the stage and lighting to contacting bands to perform and producing marketing material.  They are guided in the various aspects of putting an event together by 8 staff members.

Mr Muhammad Haizan, the staff-in-charge who has been with the club since its inception, says that he conceived Rock Central in 2014.  “I wanted to create an awareness of the underground music scene and when I found out students in ITE were jamming, I wanted to give them a platform to perform.”

The first iteration of Rock Central was “overwhelming” because it depended heavily on Mr Haizan for all technical aspects.  Over the years though, students have grown proficient in running the show themselves with advice from the staff.  In the face of Covid-19, they were even able to tweak the show to match – setting the sound up so that it would be more like a live concert and less like a studio performance.

Now, they are already looking ahead to next year’s Rock Central.  Said AVPM President Roy Lok, “I believe hybrid shows will continue which is exciting because people don’t have to join the concert physically and maybe next year we can even involve a Malaysian band.”

Always Hungry Bakes

“Some of our most memorable moments are when we bake overnight nonstop, just to get our orders out as we don’t have a central kitchen!  Having one would be great but right now, we are baking from home.  I think we’re getting used to it as we are home and there’s no need to leave the house to go to work.  We can bake till 6am, get some shut eye and continue on.

We also order all our ingredients in bulk, so you can imagine the storage side of it!  We had to think about space constraints and make the proper adjustments just to cater for this business.  When we grow, we’ll get a proper place but for the time being, home will have to do.

My wife had the passion for baking but I was only interested in eating her bakes!  I was in the car rental scene but in 2018, we got tired of working so hard for other people and decided to leave our jobs to pursue her dreams.

Our bakes depend on seasons so our biggest challenge is to maintain the business during non-peak seasons.

Sgmotorfest was one great moment as I was one of the main organisers for the event and I also set up an Always Hungry Bakes stall there.  But thinking back, the proudest point in time was when we had our wedding in 2019 and baked our own desserts and wedding favours for up to 1,400 people!  It was then that our business also grew into dessert styling and people were just amazed that we were the ones who had done it even though we had our wedding to prepare for too.  From there, we got other weddings to supply!

To succeed, you need to push yourself until there is no other way.  Don’t give up and get lazy – that will be your downfall!”

“I got ‘started’ when I was in my teens. That was nearly 20 years ago! I have worked in events and F&B (including events catering) part-time over the years and have learnt lots of stuff on the ground.

The most rewarding thing are times when you see an event being completed from scratch. And of course, the laughter and enjoyment of guests.

As for the toughest, I still see myself at a “learning stage” always.  Perhaps I have a mentality of  not saying that I’m “good enough” and instead always learning and giving the best I can offer.

Things are definitely getting slow during this period of Covid-19. So currently I’m trying to provide alternative services such as deliveries.

But Singapore is a country focusing on tourism, which brings great revenue annually. MICE itself is a big industry when it comes to events. With good hospitality and services and top-notch facilities for businesses, Singapore has an edge of attracting people from all over the world, be it for business or recreation. Also, with the lifestyle of many Singaporeans, events and entertainment are definitely great industries which both residents and foreign visitors have their eyes on!

In fact, I can see events and entertainment rising to even greater heights after Covid-19. I foresee them becoming even better than what they were pre-Covid. More opportunities are created instead of being taken away if people can see it, and you can see that people are looking forward to the opening of these industries in phase 3. Perhaps we need to endure through the darkest time to see the dawn.”

Sainou Space

When performing artiste Derrick Tay partnered with fashion and branding expert Herman Shah to found their own creative space, they never imagined that they would have to set it up during the Covid circuit breaker.

Yet, one month since its launch, SAINOUSPACE has already seen its fair share of traffic from weavers to fine artists to students.  The cosy, meditative space at Playfair Road is meant to be a space for creatives to connect and find inspiration.

“We didn’t want it to be transactional – there are many places where one can pay by the hour to use the space,” said Herman, “Here, we want to work together with artists to create a community in a safe space, whether by coming up with programmes, workshops or even merchandise.”

In this sense, SAINOUSPACE is a living environment where creatives can choose to do as they feel.  The 1,000 sq feet venue is thoughtfully appointed for just such flexibility, with tiered seating that can roll out of the way and curtains that can be drawn in different ways to create makeshift rooms.  In two back rooms, music and vocal lessons are also held.

“We feel like caretakers of the space and want to serve the artists who come to create here,” said Derrick.

Both founders also shared that they are interested in working with and educating younger people by giving them exposure to industry experts.

While they currently have to adhere to the government guidelines for social distancing, the space can comfortably fit 40 or 50 people for bigger events.

“We’ve found that students who come here don’t just come for the lesson aspect but also because any form of craft can be meditative or calming,” Herman said, “It’s a bit like therapy.”

SAINOUSPACE is at 80 Playfair Road, Block A #03-07 Singapore 367998.
